WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Bucknell softball team split its two games at George Washington’s Colonial Classic on Sunday, winning a shootout with Quinnipiac, 15-11, before falling 6-2 to Monmouth to close out the day.
The Bison were originally scheduled to play four games at the event, but weather forced the cancellation of Saturday’s games.
Bucknell is 9-3 on the season. Next up for the Bison is their spring break trip to Florida, where they will play 10 total games against Niagara, Saint Peter’s, South Carolina State, and Stetson. They will play home for the first time while opening league play against Lafayette on March 25-26.
Game 1 – Bucknell 15, Quinnipiac 11
Meghan Kovac and Lauren Hadley each homered to lead Bucknell’s 14-hit attack in a 15-11 win over Quinnipiac. The Bison had two five-run innings to help hold off an 11-hit game by the Bobcats.
Hadley’s homer was a two-run shot to center field to put Bucknell up 2-0 in the top of the first inning. It was her first of the season. Kovac’s was a grand slam down the left field line in a five-run fourth inning that put the Bison up 12-5.
Bucknell scored multiple runs in four of the first five innings and never trailed in the game. Kovac finished with five RBIs, while Marisa Alemany had three runs knocked in while going 2-for-5 with a single and double.
Lara Bean pitched 3.1 innings of relief to improve to 5-0 on the season.
Game 2 – Monmouth 6, Bucknell 2
Alemany added three more hits, but Bucknell scored just a pair of runs on its seven hits in a 6-2 to Monmouth in the second game.
Monmouth scored one run in each of the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead, but Bucknell cut the deficit to one with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth.
The Hawks pulled away with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, all of which were unearned. Bucknell’s two errors led to four unearned runs in the game.
Hadley singled and doubled for the Bison. Gimmestad and Antonellis each singled.
Monmouth improved to 2-5 with the win.
