LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell softball won for the fifth straight game, improving to 19-5 overall and a perfect 4-0 in the Patriot League with a 3-0 shutout win over Colgate on Saturday at Becker Field. Freshman Raeanne Geffert pitched her first shutout of the season while improving to 11-2 overall.

Geffert, the reigning Patriot League Pitcher of the Week, upped her record against league opponents to 3-0. In those three games – which included two complete-game victories over Lafayette last weekend – she has allowed just two runs on 10 hits and two walks while striking out 18 over 21 innings.

In Saturday’s win, Geffert gave up four hits and two walks while striking out six batters. She holds a comfortable lead in strikeouts among Patriot League pitchers with 77. Geffert stranded six Colgate runners on base, including two on third. Nicole Rounsavill led off the top of the seventh inning with a triple, but the Bison rookie kept her there with a groundout, strikeout, and groundout to end the game.

The Bucknell defense, which ranks second in the conference in fielding percentage at .961, helped preserve the shutout for Geffert. Junior Paulina Gutkin had numerous nice plays with windy conditions in left field, including a running catch near the warning track in left-center field in the fourth inning, and a catch on a sinking liner in the fifth inning.

The Bison broke a scoreless tie with one run in the fourth inning. Senior Christina Martinez had the clutch hit, driving in senior Chaylen Andolino with a two-out single to right field. Andolino reached on a one-out single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Carolyn Wan.

Bucknell tacked on one run in both the fifth and sixth innings. Junior Meghan Kovac plated freshman Marisa Alemany with a single in the fifth, and Martinez scored on a bases-loaded walk by sophomore Anna Gimmestad in the sixth.

Andolino had two of Bucknell’s seven hits with a pair of singles. Alemany, Gimmestad, Kovac, Wan and Martinez each had one single. Sophomore Lauren Hadley saw her hitting streak end at 13 games.

Bucknell is 4-0 in the Patriot League for the first time in program history. The Bison’s 19-5 record is their best at this point in the season since also starting 19-5 in 1993 under head coach Terrie Grieb.

Three teams remain unbeaten in Patriot League play. Lehigh went to 4-0 with a 4-1 win over Lafayette, while Army West Point kept its perfect conference record intact by rallying for a 7-6 win over Holy Cross.

During its five-game winning streak, Bucknell has out-scored its opponents 22-4.

Bucknell and Colgate will play a doubleheader at Becker Field on Sunday. The first game is scheduled for a noon start. The Bison have won six straight games in the series with the Raiders.
