APALACHIN, N.Y. -- Freshman Peter Bradbeer fired a 4-under-par 68, and sophomore J.P. Raftery followed with a 3-under 69 to help the Bucknell men's golf team post a season-best, 3-under 285 on day one of the Mathews Auto Collegiate Invitational, hosted by Binghamton at The LInks at Hiawatha Landing. The Bison needed a strong day to keep up with some sizzling first-round scores, and they sit in sixth place out of 16 teams with another 18 holes to come on Monday.
Of the 90 players in the field, 36 shot even par or better and 26 were in red numbers. Leading the way was Drexel's Adam Mistretta with a 7-under 65. Lafayette's Will Halamandaris, Towson's Dylan Stein, and Drexel's Connor Schmidt all shot 67. Bradbeer was one of six players to card a 68, and his career-low round puts him in a tie for fifth place. Raftery is tied for 11th following his 69. His 3-under round is his best since a 4-under 67 at last spring's Patriot League Championship.
Bucknell also counted a 73 from sophomore Jubal Early and a 75 from sophomore Ashton Radvansky. Senior John Edler posted the fifth score with a 78, while junior C.J. Zachary carded a 76 while playing as an individual.
Counting scores of 65-67-71-74, Drexel posted an 11-under 277 to take over the team lead, but only by two strokes over Binghamton and Towson. Lafayette is fourth at 282, followed by Delaware at 284 and the Bison at 285. Eight of the 16 teams in the field are under par.
The final round gets under way Monday morning. Bucknell's tee times start at 9:15 a.m.
