NEW YORK – Columbia edged the Bucknell wrestling team, 22-17, behind a victory in the final bout Saturday night at University Gymnasium.
With his second technical fall of the day, Tyler Smith (141) gave the Bison (2-11, 1-5 EIWA) a 17-13 advantage over the Lions (3-8, 2-3 EIWA) entering the final two bouts. Jacob Macalolooy (149) and No. 13 Markus Scheidel (157) came through for Columbia, with Macalolooy winning by major decision to even the score and Scheidel sealing the victory with a technical fall of his own.
Smith's 25-7 rout of J.P. Ascolese improved his 2017-18 record in dual competition to 12-0 and his overall record to 20-3. He has now won 22-straight dual bouts dating back to Jan. 14, 2017; with his two technical falls, he has now racked up bonus points in 15 bouts, winning four by fall, four by technical fall and seven by major decision.
Bucknell raced out to an early 9-3 lead thanks to bonus-point victories by D.J. Hollingshead (165) and Drew Phipps (184). Hollingshead knocked off Max Elling by a 10-2 major decision in the first bout of the evening while Phipps blanked Andrew Psomas, 15-0, securing his technical fall by scoring back points as the final buzzer sounded.
Geo Barzona (125) picked up his first career dual victory, edging fellow freshman Spencer Good by a 6-2 decision. His win, which came after the Lions turned a 9-3 deficit into a 10-9 lead thanks to victories at 197 and heavyweight, regained the lead for the Bison.
Earlier in the day, Bucknell was downed by Penn, 24-14, at the Palestra in Philadelphia. Smith and Nick Stephani (174) won their bouts against the Quakers, who improved to 6-3 (3-1 EIWA) with their victory.
After May Bethea took the dual's first bout by technical fall, Stephani pulled out a commanding 11-4 win over Quinton Hiles to trim the Bison's deficit to 5-3. Penn won the next three bouts to carry a 15-3 advantage into the intermission; a forfeit at 125 brought Bucknell back within in striking distance, trailing by a 15-9 margin.
The Quakers ultimately won three of the final four bouts. Smith rolled to his 26-11 technical fall over Jake Lizak, scoring 12 takedowns and two back points.
Next weekend, the Bison continue their road swing at Franklin & Marshall (Feb. 2 at 7:30 p.m.) and American (Feb. 4 at 12 p.m.).
