BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Bucknell had a doubles team advance to the semifinals and six players move on to the quarterfinals in singles on the first day of Lehigh’s Patriot League Kickoff on Friday.
Sophomore Paige Leavy and freshman Sofia Ayuso, who were playing together for the first time, won two matches to advance to the semifinal round in Flight B doubles. The duo opened with a 7-5 win over Army West Point’s Leslie Frankland and Sophia Suri, and followed that with another close win, 6-4 over Loyola’s Julie Clark and Nicole Eberle.
Leavy and Ayuso will look to continue their run toward a flight title with a semifinal matchup against Lehigh’s Leigh Friedman and Grace Lin.
Bucknell has an excellent chance at a title in Flight D singles, where it has three players in the quarterfinal round. Emilie Bush and Madeline Melch both defeated players from Colgate with Bush besting Stephanie Fuentes 6-4, 6-1, and Melch downing Callie Bartimer 6-1, 6-1. Sophomore Paige Leavy opened with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Loyola’s Alexandria Agee.
Freshman Rachel Carroll also had a win over a Colgate player in her first match in Flight C. She defeated Cheyenne Brown 6-2, 6-2.
Junior Mishi Papich received a bye in the opening round of Flight A, while Ayuso drew a bye in the opening round of Flight B.
Play will resume on Saturday and will conclude on Sunday.
