LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell won the first set and was tied late in the second, but Navy rallied to defeat the Bison 3-1 (21-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-19) in a Patriot League volleyball match Friday night at Davis Gym. The Mids improved to 16-5 overall and 6-3 in the Patriot League with their fifth straight win, while the Bison dropped to 4-17 overall and 2-7 in the conference.
"It was a tough loss," said Bucknell head coach Anna Allison. "We were not able to win the serve and receive game tonight, which reflected on our offense. They key is to be better tomorrow."
Bucknell stymied Navy’s attacks early on, tallying five blocks on their way to a win in the first set. The Bison would finish the match with 13 blocks, led by freshman Mimi Richards with seven block assists. Junior Hailey Stout added four block assists, while freshman Bridgette Holland had two solo and assisted on two others.
With the score tied 20-20 in the second set, Navy found its groove and scored five of the final six points to tie the match. Tara Dotzauer had the final two kills of the set and would go on to finish with a match-high 13 with a .296 hitting percentage.
Joining Dotzauer with double-digit kills was Katie Patrick, who recorded 11 with a .478 hitting percentage. Patricia Mattingly registered 45 assists, while Sydney Shearn led all players with 25 digs.
Senior Jordan Walker had a solid match for Bucknell, leading the team with 11 kills. Junior Luz Nagle picked up the start at setter and contributed 28 assists, while senior Kristen Parks returned to the lineup and tallied a team-high 21 digs. Parks added three aces, and Stout served for two.
Bucknell will celebrate Senior Day on Saturday when it hosts first-place American. The Bison will honor Keane Brazda, Erika Eastley, Rebecca Forbes, Parks, and Walker prior to the match, which is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start at Davis Gym.
American is 19-6 overall and a perfect 9-0 in the Patriot League following a 3-0 win over Lafayette on Friday. The Eagles have won four straight matches by shutout.
