HAMPTON, Va. – Tom Sleigh went 3-0 and Tyler Greene posted two wins against ranked teams as the Bucknell wrestling squad registered a 1-2 record Friday on the first day of the Virginia Duals against a difficult schedule. The Bison opened with a 23-15 victory over Campbell, but then lost to No. 19 Arizona State 29-10 and No. 24 Virginia 27-9 to close the day.

The win against Campbell marked the 100th in head coach Dan Wirnsberger’s Bucknell career. He is just the second Bison head coach to reach that figure, joining Bob Ferraro (169 wins from 1974-1997).

The Bison will wrap up competition at the Virginia Duals Saturday at 10 a.m. against Chattanooga.

Bucknell won six of 10 bouts in its win over Campbell and then captured three apiece in the losses to the nationally ranked opponents.

Sleigh was the only Bucknell wrestler to put together a perfect 3-0 mark on Friday. The nationally ranked 197-pounder was dominant, winning his three bouts by a combined 26-4 score with two major decisions. Sleigh, whose win over Willie Bivens clinched the victory against the Camels, improved to 16-4 on the season and 74-32 in his career.

Greene as well as nationally ranked teammates Tyler Smith and Victor Lopez each won two bouts on Friday. A heavyweight, Greene’s wins came against Arizona State and Virginia. His win against Virginia came in overtime against former Bison teammate Chuck Boddy, who is now a graduate student wrestler with the Cavaliers.

A 141-pounder, Smith pinned Campbell’s Joshua Heil in 4:33 to open the day, while he registered a decision against Arizona State’s Nicholas Villarreal. His only loss came to top-10 ranked George DiCamillo of Virginia.

Lopez opened the day with a decision and later upended Virginia’s nationally ranked Andrew Atkinson by a 7-3 score in the 157-pound weight class. Lopez, who moved into ninth place on the program’s all-time wins list on Friday with 94, suffered his only loss to nationally ranked Josh Shields of Arizona State.

Bucknell’s other individual victories came against Campbell with Joey Gould (133) winning by major decision, Logan Kerin (165) winning by decision and D.J. Hollingshead (174) winning by decision.

Bucknell’s opponents on Friday featured eight nationally ranked individuals.

The Bison are currently in the Silver Bracket at the Virginia Duals. Bucknell finished in second place in its three-team pod with Arizona State and Campbell. The second-place teams in all four brackets moved to the Silver Bracket. Chattanooga and Lock Haven squared off in the other half of the Silver Bracket with Lock Haven winning by a slim 19-18 score.
