HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Abby Sotomayor was on the finishing end of an 87th-minute counterattack, sending Colgate to a 3-2 win over Bucknell in a battle of Patriot League women's soccer unbeatens on Saturday night at Beyer-Small '76 Field. Back-to-back goals from seniors Kendall Ham and Maddie Mulford had given the Bison a 2-1 lead, but the Raiders responded with two tallies in the final half-hour to take the win.
Bucknell, which had outscored opponents 14-0 en route to a 5-0 Patriot League record coming in, fell to 8-7 overall and 5-1 in league play. Colgate, which has eight wins and a draw in its last nine outings, upped its mark to 9-4-1 overall and 5-0-1 in the Patriot League. Colgate and Navy are now tied for first place with 16 points, while the Bison sit just one point back with three games to play in the regular season.
The Raiders stunned the Bison with a goal on a high shot from about 40 yards out from Ellis Miller just over 10 minutes in to the match. But the Bison tied it in the 34th minute when Ham's deflected shot from close range found the back of the net. It was Ham's team-leading sixth goal of the season and 35th of her career. She moved within one of catching Jennifer Dervarics for third place on Bucknell's career goals chart.
It remained 1-1 into the 55th minute when the Bison used a set piece to take the lead for the first time in the game. Following a foul just to the right of the box, Maddie Dano served a free kick that bounced around in the box before being poked home by Mulford. It was the third goal of the season and 15th of her career for Mulford.
Colgate equalized in the 64th minute. The Bison got caught scrambling a bit in their own box, and Eliza Doll looped a high-arcing shot over everyone and into the back of the net.
Bucknell was pushing for a late game-winner, but Colgate took possession coming out of their own end, and eventually Sotomayor and Mara Cosentino played a nice combo to send Sotomayor in on a breakaway. She slotted a shot just inside the left post with 3:53 remaining on the clock.
Colgate finished with an 18-13 shot advantage, while the Bison led 4-0 in corner kicks. Dani Kaufman made seven saves for Bucknell, while Kelly Chiavaro tallied four for the Raiders.
The Bison have two Patriot League games next week, both at home. They will host Lehigh on Wednesday at 7 p.m., and then Boston University will be in for Senior Day next Saturday at 2 p.m.
