NEWARK, Del. --- The Bucknell softball team upped its winning streak to five games and continued its run of dominant pitching with an 11-1 win in five innings over Delaware on Saturday in the first of four games at the Blue Hen Blast. The Bison improved to 7-4 overall, while the Blue Hens dropped to 8-6.

The Bison’s pitching struggled in the second game of the day, but their winning streak may still stay intact. Their game with Delaware State was suspended due to darkness with the score tied 9-9 in the top of the sixth inning.

Bucknell jumped all over Delaware in the first game of the day, scoring all 11 of its runs in the first three innings. It didn’t need much, though, as Amanda Fazio gave up just one unearned on five hits. She struck out seven batters and didn’t issue a walk. The senior is 3-2 with a 1.17 ERA in seven appearances this season. She has 31 strikeouts and just five walks.

Freshman Anna Gimmestad paced Bucknell’s 12-hit attack with a double and triple, while also driving in four runs. She has four doubles during her rookie season, while the triple was the first of her career. Maddie Minneci had a pinch-hit double, while Carolyn Wan and Lauren Hadley each tallied two singles. Hadley recorded three RBIs.

Sophomore Meghan Kovac didn’t see a lot to hit in the game, walking in two of her four plate appearances, but she managed to up her season-opening hitting streak to 11 games. She then made it 12 games with a double in the suspended game with Delaware State. Through 11 games, Kovac is batting .667 with a .698 on-base percentage.

Also collecting singles for the Bison were Jacee Almond, Christina Martinez, Chaylen Andolino and Shannon Murphy.

Bucknell’s five-game winning streak has come in dominant fashion. The Bison have outscored their opponents 44-5 during that stretch.

The Bison’s game with Delaware State will resume at 10 a.m. on Sunday. They will play a second game with the Hornets at 10:30 a.m. and will have a rematch with Delaware at 3:30 p.m.
