KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Amanda Fazio turned in yet another dominant pitching performance in the first game, and Meghan Kovac helped the Bucknell lineup break out of a slump with a two-run home run in the second game as the Bucknell softball team swept Rider on Tuesday.
The Bison improved to 13-7 overall and 3-1 during their spring trip at the Rebel Spring Games. They edged the Broncs 1-0 in the first game of the day before rolling to an 8-1 win in the second game.
Bucknell will play four more games during its spring trip. The Bison will take on Indiana State and Albany on Thursday, and will then take on Albany twice more on Friday.
Game 1 -- Bucknell 1, Rider 0
Fazio struck out 11 batters, walked none and gave up just one hit while pitching her second shutout of the season. The lone hit was a bunt single by the second batter of the game.
Fazio moved to 6-4 with a 0.87 ERA this season. She has struck out 59 batters and walked seven over 64.2 innings. She has gone 14 straight innings without giving up an earned run.
Bucknell scored the game’s lone run in the top of the first inning. With one out, Carolyn Wan was hit by a pitch and then moved into scoring position on a groundout by Kovac. Jacee Almond knocked in the eventual game-winning run with a single to left field.
Almond went 2-for-2 , adding a double and a walk. Wan and Anna Gimmestad had one hit apiece.
Game 2 -- Bucknell 8, Rider 1
After scoring just one run in the first two games with Rider, the Bison erupted for eight in the final game. Kovac led the way with three hits, including a double and her two-run shot to left-center field in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Bean started the game for Bucknell and gave up just one run on six hits in four innings of work to pick up her first win of the season. She struck out three batters and walked none. Cherness came in and recorded a save with three innings of scoreless relief. She gave up one hit and struck out two batters.
Bucknell trailed 1-0 after three innings before scoring two in the fourth, two in the fifth and four in the sixth. Christina Martinez knocked in the go-ahead run with a double in the fourth inning.
Fazio went 2-for-2 and scored a pair of runs. Almond, Gimmestad and Martinez had one hit apiece.
