LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell came up just short of recording a sweep in its first Patriot League softball series of the season, falling to Holy Cross 5-4 in the final game on Sunday. Taylor Wahler went 4-for-4 and drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh inning for the Crusaders.
Bucknell dropped to 16-11 overall and 2-1 in the Patriot League, while Holy Cross improved to 5-19 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
The Bison battled back from a three-run deficit to tie the game at 4-all before Holy Cross scored the eventual game-winning run in the top of the seventh inning. Chaylen Andolino led off the bottom half of the inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Christina Martinez. With two outs, the Bison were given a second chance when a potential game-ending groundball was bobbled at second base, but Andolino was left stranded at third.
Bucknell had 10 hits and had at least one runner reach base in every inning, but stranded 13 runners. Meghan Kovac, Lauren Hadley and Ryanne Rokos had two hits apiece, while Amanda Fazio had the team’s lone extra-base hit with a double to deep center field in the third inning.
With Holy Cross leading 3-0, Fazio’s one-out double came during a third inning that saw Bucknell cut the deficit to one run. Fazio would later score on a throwing error to the plate following a groundball to second base by Anna Gimmestad. Maddie Minneci scored the second run of the inning on a single by Hadley.
The top of the lineup gave Bucknell’s two pitchers trouble, accounting for eight of the team’s 11 hits. Jaclyn Brewster, Wahler, Emily Krisanda and Taylor Moss also scored four of the Crusaders’ five runs and had all five RBIs.
Gennifer Durham, who Bucknell defeated on Saturday, recorded her fourth win of the season with 3.2 innings of solid relief. She gave up two unearned runs, didn’t walk a batter and struck out two. Katy Watson, who the Bison also posted a win against on Saturday, started the game and then re-entered to get the final three outs and a save.
Fazio started and went four innings for the Bison. She gave up three runs on seven hits while striking out one batter. Dana Nielsen went the final three innings and gave up two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out three.
Bucknell will continue league play when it travels to play Lafayette on April 2-3. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon, and will play one game on Sunday at noon.
