LEWISBURG, Pa. – Freshman Raeanne Geffert and senior Lara Bean pitched back-to-back gems to lead Bucknell to a doubleheader sweep of visiting Lafayette in the Bison’s Patriot League softball opening games Saturday at Becker Field.

Geffert and Bean combined to give up just one run while hurling a pair of complete games. Geffert started game one and led Bucknell to a 2-1 win, while Bean was in the circle for game two and pitched the Bison to a 4-0 shutout victory.

Bucknell improved to 17-5 overall and 2-0 in the Patriot League, while Lafayette dropped to 1-9 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

The teams will conclude the three-game series on Sunday, The game has been moved up one hour to an 11 a.m. start due to potential rain in the afternoon.

Game 1 – Bucknell 2, Lafayette 1
Junior Meghan Kovac drove in the eventual game-winning run with a single in the bottom of the fifth inning to give Bucknell the one-run win in the first game. Geffert pitched all seven innings to get the win, improving to 9-2 in her rookie season.

With one out and the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Hadley reached base with an infield single to shortstop and then stole second to move into scoring position. Kovac came through with her single up the middle, but the Bison failed to pull away in the inning, stranding runners on second and third.

The one-run advantage was all Geffert needed. She retired six of the final seven batters. For the game, Geffert gave up one run on three hits. She struck out five and didn’t issue a walk.

Lafayette took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, but Bucknell responded immediately with a run in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game. Sophomore Anna Gimmestad plated Maddie Minneci, who was pinch-running for Christina Martinez, with a double down the right-field line.

Bucknell had eight hits in the game, but left eight runners on base. Gimmestad singled and doubled. Gutkin and Martinez each had two singles, while Hadley and Kovac contributed one hit apiece.

Game 2 – Bucknell 4, Lafayette 0
Bean gave up three hits, walked one batter, and struck out three in a complete-game shutout to give the Bison the doubleheader sweep with a 4-0 win in the second game.

Bucknell scored all of its runs in the first three innings, taking the lead with one in the first before adding two in the second and the final run in the third.

Kovac put the Bison on the board with an RBI single in the first inning, while freshman Marisa Alemany had the big hit in the second with a two-run double.

Hadley again used her speed on the basepaths to give Bucknell an insurance run in the third. She ripped a single through the left side of the infield to lead off the inning, and put herself into scoring position with a stolen base. Kovac did her part with a productive out, advancing Hadley to third with a groundout to second base. Gutkin then continued a fundamentally sound inning by laying down a nice bunt that scored Hadley and allowed her to reach first on a fielder’s choice.

Hadley has a team-leading nine stolen bases on the season. She has been caught just twice on her 11 attempts.

Bean improved to 7-2 on the year. She allowed just three runners to reach scoring position.

The Bison finished with seven hits, all of which were singles. Hadley led the way with two, while Alemany, Gimmestad, Kovac, Chaylen Andolino, and Celina Antonellis each chipped in with one.
