WILMINGTON, N.C. – Taylor Langtry pitched a complete-game shutout to lead Bucknell to a 3-0 victory over Maine on Saturday at Boseman Field. The Bison fell to Longwood 3-0 later in the day to wrap up the second day of competition at UNCW’s Seahawk Softball Classic.
Bucknell moved its record to 3-6 overall and 2-2 in its four games at the tournament. Maine closed the day at 2-2 overall, while Longwood is now 6-3 on the season.
The Bison had reverse results from the previous day when they opened with a loss to the Black Bears, but bounced back with a win over the Lancers. They conclude play at the Seahawk Softball Classic with a game against host UNCW on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
Bucknell 3, Maine 0
Langtry was phenomenal in her first career start, pitching a two-hit shutout in a 3-0 win over Maine. She walked four batters and struck out four.
The teams battled to a scoreless tie through four innings before Bucknell broke through for three runs in the top of the fifth. Lauren Lichtenwalner started the rally with a walk, and the Bison went on to score runs on a double by Taylor Wolfgang and singles by Tara Baglivo and Lauren Hadley.
That was more than enough runs for Langtry. The senior hasn’t allowed an earned run in 10 innings of work this season.
Because of the four walks and two Bucknell errors, Langtry did have to work out of trouble on a couple of occasions. She stranded runners on second and third in the first inning, and then left the bases loaded in the sixth.
The Bison had four hits in the game. In addition to the three hits in the fifth inning, Marisa Alemany contributed a single.
Longwood 3, Bucknell 0
Wolfgang added two more hits in Bucknell’s second game of the day, but the Bison couldn’t get anything going offensively in a 3-0 loss to Longwood.
The Lancers scored in each of the first two innings and then added another run in the fourth. Jenna Dunn led the way with a double and a triple.
Bucknell gave itself a chance in the seventh inning after loading the bases with one out, but the scoring threat ended with a lineout and a flyout. The Bison also had a runner in scoring position in the first and third innings.
Sydney Gay went the distance to get the shutout for Longwood, giving up five hits while walking one and striking out four. She is a two-time Second Team All-Big South selection and the 2017 Big South Tournament MVP. The junior is unbeaten at 3-0 on the season.
