CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Bucknell men’s tennis closed its opening weekend of play with a pair of losses, falling to UNCG and Richmond on Monday. The Bison started the day with a 6-1 loss to UNCG in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and then fell 6-1 to the Spiders in Richmond, Virginia later the same day.

The Bison are 0-5 to start the season, but the schedule has includes some of the top teams they will play all season, including No. 9 North Carolina in the first match of the spring.

“While I am certainly not happy with starting off the season 0-5, I strongly believe this weekend checked two big boxes in the development of the men's tennis program at Bucknell,” Bucknell head coach Bruce Myers said. “I know each student-athlete had an amazing experience playing the ninth-ranked team in the nation as well as utilizing their facility all weekend. It was great to interact with the UNC players and coaching staff who attended all of our matches.  From a player development standpoint, as a new coach it was a good opportunity to watch five highly competitive matches in a 60-hour period.”

Junior Max Kane had a solid three-set win in the match against UNCG. After dropping the first set 6-0, Kane had an impressive turnaround with 6-3 and 7-5 wins in the final two sets against Jack Burkill.

The Bison added a doubles win on court three. Junior Timber Erskine and senior Bryan Adams picked up the win by a 6-3 score.

Bucknell’s point against Richmond came in the doubles competition. Juniors Ben Gerber and Daniel Wright were 6-2 winners on court two, while Adams and Erskine posted their second straight victory by a 6-2 score on court three.

“With almost three full weeks of training before our next matches, we have a laundry list of things to focus on in practice,” Myers said. “We went 1-4 in third sets and 0-2 in tiebreaks which we will turn around with confidence and additional match play. I am excited to get back on campus and work with the players this week.”
