BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior Melissa Parks led the Bucknell women’s tennis team at the Lehigh Invitational, which wrapped up at the Ulrich Varsity Courts on Sunday. The team co-captain won her first two matches to advance to the semifinal round in Flight 4 singles.

Due to potential rain in the area, the matches were played as an eight-game pro set. Parks edged her first two opponents, beating Fordham’s Caroline Sa and Lehigh’s Leigh Friedman both by a score of 8-6. Her run in the draw came to an end with an 8-1 loss to eventual champion Destiny Grunin from Fordham. Parks is 3-4 on the season.

The Bison had two players win the consolation draw, including senior co-captain Michele Urbinati in Flight 1. Following a loss to Fordham’s Estelle Wong in the opening round, she responded with wins over Lafayette’s Tori Almeida and then her teammate, Grace Conrad. She defeated Conrad 8-1 in the consolation final. Urbinati improved to 4-4 during the fall.

Sophomore Mishi Papich bounced back after a loss to Fordham’s Carina Ma in the opening round of Flight 2, winning her next two matches in the consolation draw. She topped Lafayette’s Gabby Montes 8-2, and defeated teammate Paige Leavy 8-6 in the consolation final. Papich is 5-3 on the year.

“We didn’t execute well as a team this weekend, but there were a few positives, especially in our doubles play,” said Bucknell head coach Rebecca Helt. “As long as we learn from these difficult performances, then it’s a positive gain.”

Bucknell will compete at the Navy Blue & Gold Invitational on Oct. 7-9.
