EASTON, Pa. – Bucknell women’s tennis came up just short of a third consecutive win to open the season on Sunday, dropping a tough 4-3 decision to Wagner in a non-conference match at the Northwood Racquet Club. The close loss came to a red-hot Wagner team that improved to 6-1 with its fifth straight win.

Four of the six singles matches went three sets in the evenly-matched contest. Each team won two of those matches, with Bucknell’s three-set victories coming on court two and court four.

Sophomore Lauren Fishbein improved to 2-0 during the spring, outlasting Samantha Hodges, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 on court two. Junior Madeline Melch won in comeback fashion on court four, bouncing back from 6-3 loss in set one with 6-0, 6-2 victories.

Senior captain Melissa Parks helped the Bison go 3-3 in singles matches on the day, cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 win on court six.

Melch improved to a perfect 3-0 during the spring, while Parks also remained unbeaten at 2-0.

Bucknell was only able to take one of three doubles matches while dropping the first point. Fishbein and senior captain Michele Urbinati were 6-3 winners over Vedika Anand and Melanie Post on court one. The duo upped its record to 6-3 overall and 2-0 in the spring.

“We were unfortunately missing Lisa Jouravleva from the doubles lineup, and I think that's the point we needed,” Bucknell head coach Rebecca Helt said. “Still, I was very pleased with the way we are playing singles, but we've got to figure out how to put that doubles point on the board consistently.”

The Bison return to action with a pair of matches next weekend. They will travel to New York to play at St. Bonaventure on Saturday and at Niagara on Sunday.
