LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell volleyball team was increasingly competitive in each set, but fell in three sets to visiting American on Saturday at Davis Gym. The Eagles, the two-time defending champions in the Patriot League, won by scores of 25-14, 25-15, 25-21.

The Bison remain above .500 on the year at 7-6 and need just one more win to eclipse last season’s win total. They dropped to 1-2 in conference play. The Eagles improved to 9-5 overall and 2-0 in the Patriot League. Just two matches into the conference schedule, only American and Army West Point are without a loss.

Reigning Patriot League Player of the Year and Setter of the Year Monika Smidova led American with 35 assists, seven kills, two solo blocks and two aces. Allison Cappelino finished with 13 kills and Kristyna Lindovska added 10, helping the Eagles finish with a hitting percentage of .345.

Senior Meghan Wentzel tallied 25 assists and five digs for Bucknell, which was coming off its first win over Navy since 2011. Hailey Stout led the team in kills with eight and digs with six, while Erika Eastley paced the team in total blocks with three. Jenna Slusar had the team’s lone ace.

The Bison continue conference play with a pair of games next weekend. They will host Lehigh on Friday at 7 p.m. and will travel to play Lafayette on Saturday at 4 p.m.
