CARY, N.C. - The Bucknell baseball team opened its 2017 season Saturday, splitting a twin bill with Marist in Cary, North Carolina.
Game 1 – Marist 5, Bucknell 0
Marist pitcher Charlie Jerla held the Bison to two hits as the Red Foxes rolled to a 5-0 win in the first game.
The Red Foxes, coming off a second straight appearance in the MAAC Championship Game, got on the board in the second inning off an RBI-double from Matt Iantosca.
Marist tacked on three more runs in the third inning and one more in the sixth to pick up the 5-0 victory.
Game 2 – Bucknell 7, Marist 3
Trailing 3-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Bison scored four runs to take the lead and not look back en route to a 7-3 win.
Mike Castellani went five innings, striking out six batters. P.J. Strahm and Mike Stephens came on in relief, limiting Marist to just two hits. Rafferty closed the door on the Red Foxes in the ninth inning for the save.
Bucknell and Marist will wrap up their three-game set Sunday at 11 a.m.
