LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI scored 10 runs on 13 hits to defeat the Bucknell baseball team in the middle game of a three-game series Saturday at Gray-Minor Stadium.
The Bucknell bullpen provided solid relief for starter Mike Castellani, who left the game two outs into the fourth inning trailing 7-1. Jack Simpson and P.J. Strahm pitched the final 4.1 innings and were charged with three earned runs.
Five different Bison recorded a hit in the contest, including Evan Klugerman, who finished 2-for-3 at the plate. Brett Smith and Keifer Rawlings recorded RBIs in the game, as the Bison scored a single run each in the second and ninth innings. Michael Korchak and Alex Salem were each credited with a run scored.
VMI (3-4) starter Matthew Eagle (1-0) pitched six innings, limiting the Bison to one run on five hits. Two relievers pitched the final three innings, allowing just one run.
The Keydets scored runs in each of the first four innings, while scoring a single run in the sixth and two more in the eighth. VMI totaled six extra base hits, including two home runs and four doubles.
Four VMI players finished with at least two hits, including Matt Dunlevy, who went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Bucknell will wrap up its three-game series at VMI Sunday at 1 p.m.
