PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Despite a four-run ninth inning, the Bucknell baseball team dropped a 9-8 decision Tuesday to Harvard at the Snowbird Classic at North Charlotte Regional Park. The loss snaps a three-game winning streak by the Bison.
Bucknell (6-6) produced 13 hits in the contest, including three from JohnPaul Bell. Luke Johnson and Chuckie Scales posted two hits apiece, while Brett Smith extended his hitting streak to a team-high seven games. Smith, Bell and Johnson each scored two runs in the loss.
Jeff Gottesman (1-1) started on the mound for the Bison. He pitched five innings and allowed nine hits, while being charged with five earned runs. P.J. Strahm (0.1 IP), Matt Shobe (2.2 IP) and Tommy Gambon pitched the final four innings in relief. Shobe was solid on the hill, limiting the Crimson to one hit.
The Bison got on the board first in the second inning, as Johnson scored off a groundout by Tyler Wincig.
Harvard (6-3), coming off a four-game series at Jacksonville, countered with two runs in the third inning to take the lead.
Bucknell regained the lead in the bottom of the inning, thanks to RBI singles from Luke Hartman and Johnson. The Bison added another run in the fifth inning, as Smith scored on a two-out single from Hartman.
The Crimson plated four in the sixth inning, fueled by a bases-loaded double from Drew Reid. Harvard scored three more times in the ninth inning to hold a 9-4 advantage.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Bison began their comeback trail with a leadoff single from Scales, who was thrown out on a fielder’s choice by Smith. On the following at bat, Smith advanced to second on a single from Bell and made it to third on a wild pitch, scoring on a sacrifice fly from Danny Rafferty. Hartman drew a walk, while Bell advanced to third on a wild pitch. Johnson drew a walk on his plate appearance, loading the bases. In to pinch hit, Sam Clark singled up the middle, scoring two runs, while advancing Johnson to third. Evan Klugerman scored Johnson on his at bat, leaving runners on first and third with two outs. Wincig flew out to center field to end the game.
Grant Stone (1-0) pitched 5.2 innings on the mound, giving up seven hits and was charged with four earned runs. Garrett Rupp (2.2 IP) and Kieran Shaw (0.2 IP) pitched the final 3.1 innings.
Harvard finished with 14 hits, including three each from Chad Minato, Trent Bryan and Josh Ellis.
Bucknell returns to action Wednesday with a game against Ohio State. Opening pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m. Live stats are available here.
