BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Bucknell baseball team opened up Patriot League play Saturday with a doubleheader split at Lehigh. The Bison took the opening game 3-1, while the Mountain Hawks won the nightcap, 10-2.
The Bison move to 10-13 overall and 1-1 in league play, while the Mountain Hawks move to 9-14 and 1-1 in Patriot League action.
Bucknell and Lehigh will conclude their four-game series with a doubleheader on Sunday. Game one is set to begin at 12 p.m. Both games will broadcast on the Patriot League Network.
Game 1: Bucknell 3, Lehigh 1
Bucknell scored first with two runs in the second inning, starting with a leadoff single from Clark. Following an out, Keifer Rawlings drew a walk to put runners on first and second. On the next at bat, Evan Klugerman singled through the left side to score Clark and advance Rawlings to second, followed by a single from Wincig to load the bases. Rawlings would score on a fielder’s choice by Bell.
Lehigh answered with one run in the bottom of the inning, thanks to a RBI-single from David Young to score John Scarr.
The Bison got the run back in the third inning with a leadoff single from Chuckie Scales, who advanced to second on a failed pickoff and moved to third on a groundout. Scales scored on the next at bat off a single from Clark.
Connor Van Hoose was impressive in his first career complete game. He scattered four hits and struck out 10, while surrendering just one earned run.
Game 2: Lehigh 10, Bucknell 2
Lehigh scored two runs in the opening inning and homered in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. The Mountain Hawks plated three in the fourth and one more in the fifth to expand their lead.
The Bison scored two runs in the sixth inning, thanks to a RBI-single from Bell and a bases loaded walk from Danny Rafferty.
Lehigh added a run in the bottom of the sixth and scored two more in the eighth for the doubleheader split.
Bucknell threatened in multiple innings, leaving at least one man on in five frames, including three in both the fourth and sixth innings.
