LEWISBURG, Pa. – Brett Smith went 5-for-6 with two RBIs, one home run and two runs scored, Luke Johnson went 5-for-7 with three extra base hits and two runs scored, Evan Madigan went 3-for-7 with one extra base hit, two RBIs and one run scored, while Bucknell received strong pitching as it swept a doubleheader against Lafayette Satuday at Depew Field. The Bison claimed the opener 4-1 and won the nightcap by a 6-5 score.
Bucknell (15-18, 6-4 PL) picked up its second doubleheader sweep of the season, both coming against Patriot League opponents. The Bison took two games from Lehigh back on Apr. 2.
As a team, the Bison hit .316 Saturday, recording 18 hits, 11 extra base hits and 11 RBIs. Bucknell posted six doubles, three triples and a pair of home runs.
The Bison will be back on the field to conclude the four-game series with a doubleheader on Sunday. Game one is slated for noon. Before game one, the Bucknell baseball program will recognize its 2017 senior class. Both contests will have an audio broadcast available via bucknellbison.com. The broadcast will also air on WVBU 90.5 FM.
Game 1: Bucknell 4, Lafayette 1
Connor Van Hoose tossed his second complete game of the season to pick up his fourth win on the bump, scattering six hits while striking out nine. Van Hoose has 71 strikeouts this year, the sixth-most in a single season in Bucknell history.
The Bison got on the board in the second inning, capitalizing on a leadoff triple from Johnson, who scored on a sacrifice fly from Danny Rafferty.
Bucknell plated two more in the third inning. Smith led off the inning with a double to left field. Following a groundout, Clark smacked a ball to left center for his team-leading fourth home run of the season. The Bison added one more run in the fifth inning, thanks to a two-out single from Keifer Rawlings to score Rafferty.
The Leopards scored their lone run of the contest in the sixth inning on a fielding error.
Game 2: Bucknell 6. Lafayette 5
Bucknell scored first, plating three in the second inning. Madigan singled up the middle to score two runners and later rounded the bases on a two-out single from Smith.
The Leopards answered with one run in the third inning and scored three more in the fifth inning to take the lead. Lafayette scored one more run in the ninth inning.
Bucknell took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring two runs. Clark led off the inning with a triple and scored on a double from Rawlings, who later scored on a groundout by JohnPaul Bell.
The Bison tacked on another run in the sixth inning after Smith crushed a ball over the left field fence for his second home run of the year. Smith also hit a triple in the game, finishing a double short of hitting for the cycle.
Mike Castellani earned the win on the mound. He pitched 6.2 innings, scattering eight hits and was charged with four earned runs. Jack Simpson was the only reliever used on Saturday and was solid in his outing. He came in for the final 2.1 innings, surrendering two hits and one earned run en route to picking up his first save in a Bison uniform.
