CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Ratimir Babic broke a 7-7 tie with a six-on-five goal with just over 30 seconds to play and the Bison defense came up with a crucial stop as the Bucknell men’s water team defeated No. 9 Princeton by an 8-7 score Saturday evening at Blodgett Pool during the Harvard Invitational. The Bison, who are ranked 13th nationally this week, snapped a six-game losing streak to the Tigers and improved to 13-2 this season.
Bucknell trailed by one goal for the majority of the fourth quarter as Matt Payne tallied his game-high fourth goal with 6:16 remaining in the fourth period to put Princeton (13-7) on top 7-6. A Rade Joksimovic goal with 1:17 remaining evened the score.
Joksimovic had a hand in the winning goal as well. He drew an ejection with just over 30 seconds to play, giving the Bison a six-on-five opportunity. Just a few seconds later Babic scored off a pass from Joksimovic, staking Bucknell to a one-goal lead.
Princeton had one more opportunity, but Charlie Niehaus saved a Jovan Jeremic shot to clinch the victory for the Bison. It was his 12th save of the game and helped Bucknell win for the 11th time in 12 outings.
Bucknell now has four victories over ranked opponents this year. The Bison play No. 12 Harvard Sunday at 8 a.m. and then finish the weekend against unranked Iona Sunday at 1 p.m.
