Patriot League Championships Preview

The Bucknell men’s swimming & diving team has found success at the Patriot League Championships in Dan Schinnerer’s tenure as head coach. Since he took the reins ahead of the 2006-07 campaign, the Bison have finished no lower than fourth at the Patriot League championship meet, placing as high as second in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2012.

While Bucknell didn’t have the dual meet season Schinnerer hoped, he believes his young team has the potential to make a splash at the 2018 Patriot League Championships, which begin on Wednesday at Navy’s Lejeune Hall.

“We didn’t have the dual meet season we hoped, but we have all the pieces back in place as we head into the championship season,” Schinnerer said. “It’s going to be incumbent on our team success to have some people really step up. We definitely have some spots where we can do it. It’s a young team; they don’t have a ton of experience. So we’re going to need people to exceed expectations.”

More than any Bison, Chris Devlin enters this year’s championship meet with high expectations. Devlin was named the Patriot League Male Swimmer of the Meet in both 2016 and 2017 and owns school records in the 100 backstroke (47.74), 200 backstroke (1:43.14), 200 IM (1:48.02) and 400 IM (3:49.04). He also boasts five Patriot League individual titles in three events: the 100 backstroke (2017), 200 backstroke (2016 & 2017) and 400 IM (2015 & 2016).

“Chris has put himself in a position to be successful,” Schinnerer said. “He’s been coming on strong lately. He has to be considered the favorite in the 200 backstroke going into the meet. He has goals in the 200 IM so we’re excited to see him race in that event. He’ll have some stiff competition in the 100 backstroke as he tries to defend that title. It was a close race last year, but Chris is a great racer. On the big day, he steps up really well so we’re excited to see what he can do at his last Patriot League Championship meet.”

Chadd Cummings, who holds a school record in the 100 breaststroke (54.65) and the second-fastest time in the 200 breaststroke (2:00.19), is also expected to make an impact. Cummings placed fifth in both events at the 2017 Patriot League Championships and looked strong throughout the dual meet season.

Schinnerer highlighted Mitch Gavars, Matt McGoey and Garrett Sommer has three underclassmen to watch. Sommer has been particularly impressive during his freshman campaign, cracking Bucknell’s top 10 in both the 1-meter (7th, 259.73) and 3-meter (249.08) dives.

“Garrett can definitely be a strong contributor for us on the boards,” Schinnerer said. “Navy is very strong at the top end, but he has the ability to be a championship finalist. That would definitely be a great starting point for him in his Patriot League Championship career.”
