BOSTON, Mass. – Nicholas Lombardo and Drew Dorflinger earned Patriot League Male Athlete of the Meet honors on the final day of competition at the Patriot League Indoor Track & Field Championships at Boston University. Bucknell finished fourth overall with 130 points, earning four All-Patriot League honorees and reaching the podium in eight events.
Navy tallied 187 points to capture the title for the second straight season. Army West Point was the runner-up with 168.66 points, followed by Boston University in third with 132.
Lombardo was named Patriot League Male Field Athlete of the Meet, becoming the third Bison and the first since Ray Holmes in 2014 to receive the honor. After winning both the high jump and long jump on Saturday, Lombardo reached the podium for a third time in the triple jump. He finished third with a leap of 48-4, now a top-10 Bucknell performance.
Dorflinger became the fourth Bison in program history to be named Patriot League Male Rookie of the Meet and the first since Chris Sacks in 2011. After winning the 5,000-meter race, Drew Dorflinger added to the Bison score with a top-five effort in the 3,000m.
Will Carter set the school record in the 200m with a time of 21.48, breaking the previous mark of 21.55 earned by Christian Lupica in 2013, finishing third overall to win the bronze medal. Carter also added to the Bison point total in the 60m with a mark of 6.97.
Matthew Fay earned All-Patriot League status in the pole vault. He was the runner-up in the event, clearing 16-0 ¾, tying his indoor-best.
Joseph Breen earned the bronze in the shot put, finishing third with a heave 55-2 ¾, earning a medal in the event for the second straight season.
William Melchionni recorded a top-10 school performance in the 400m, placing fourth with a time of 49.04. Jacob Ashkettle finished fourth in the 500m in 1:04.43, which is also a top-10 program mark. Sean Conway also scored in the race, taking eighth in 1:05.61.
Jordan Jackson finished fifth in the 1,000m with a time of 2:27.85. In the finals of the 60 hurdles, Matthew Barton cracked the top-five with a time of 8:39. Peter Onusconich finished eighth, adding to the Bison score.
In the distance medley relay, a team comprised of Adams, Conway, Gulizio and Jacob Stupak took fifth in 10:14.81.
“I was as proud of our men as I was with the women,” said head coach Kevin Donner. “Although we were fourth again, we were much closer to the top three teams than last year. We are a very blue-collar men’s team that needs to fight and claw for every single point. We kind of ran out of steam by the time relays came around, but we gave it all we had.”
The Bison wrap up the indoor season Mar. 4-5, when the team returns to Boston to compete in the ECAC Indoor Championships.
