BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Nicholas Lombardo and William Melchionni earned Patriot League Male Athlete of the Meet honors while leading the Bucknell men's track and field team on the final day of the Patriot League Outdoor Championships at Lehigh's Goodman Track and Field Complex. Seven Bison earned All-Patriot League honors at the two-day meet.
Battling through rainy conditions for the second straight day, the Bison men finished fourth among the nine-team field with 116 points. Navy won the team title for the third consecutive season with 264 points, while Army finished second with 174 points and Boston University took third with 147 points.
Lombardo was named Male Field Athlete of the Meet, becoming the fourth Bison and the first since Leonard Joseph in 2013 to receive the honor. He joins Ron Hess (1999) to earn Patriot League Athlete of the Meet recognition in the same indoor and outdoor season.
After successfully defending his crown in the long jump on Friday, Lombardo became the first Bison in program history to win a Patriot League title in the outdoor high jump, winning the event with a leap of 6-9 ¾. Elijah Kay scored in the event with a fifth-place finish.
Lombardo also scored in the triple jump, taking fifth with a leap of 47-2 ¼, now a top-10 program mark. Reggie Harris also scored in the event with an eighth-place showing.
Melchionni was named Male Track Athlete of the Meet, becoming the fifth Bison and the first since Christian Lupica in 2014 to earn the citation. The sophomore became the first Bison runner since Rob Arent in 2011 to win the gold medal in the 400-meter race. The sophomore recorded a time of 47.43, now the second-fastest performance in Bucknell history. Jacob Ashkettle also scored in the race, finishing eighth.
It was one of two podium trips for Melchionni, who later won the bronze in the 200m with a time of 22.00.
Competing in his first outdoor championships, Drew Dorflinger reached the podium in the 1,500m. The rookie finished third with a time of 3:49.20, a new top-10 program mark. Dorflinger also scored in the 5,000m, placing fifth.
In the 4x100m relay, a team of Ryquan Harris, Bobby Gablein, Jeffrey Brown and Melchionni finished fourth with a time of 41.12, now the fourth-fastest finish in Bucknell history. In the 4x400m relay, a team of Jacob Ashkettle, Steve Rizio, Scott Gulizio and Melchionni finished fifth with a time of 3:20.45.
One day after earning his first career All-Patriot League citation on Friday, Luke Giugliano added to the Bison score in the 5,000m, finishing fourth.
After receiving All-Patriot League accolades in the 4x800m relay, Jordan Jackson scored for Bucknell in the 800m, finishing fifth with a time of 1:53.04.
“I was very proud of our guys,” said head coach Kevin Donner. “They clawed for every possible point. Great to see Lombardo and Melchionni win major awards. We have a great future ahead of us as both return plus a lot of solid underclassmen.”
Bucknell will compete at the IC4A Outdoor Championships next week (May 12-14) at Princeton.
