LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell’s three nationally ranked wrestlers – Tyler Smith, Victor Lopez and Tom Sleigh – posted bonus-point victories and Lewisburg native Jordan Gessner registered a victory in his first career home bout as the Bison defeated Franklin & Marshall by a 33-6 score Tuesday evening in Sojka Pavilion. It was the first home match of the season for Bucknell, which improved to 1-2 overall and 1-1 against EIWA foes.

The Bison led by a 7-6 margin after four bouts and proceeded to capture each of the final six to defeat the Diplomats (1-1) for the third straight year and for the 13th time in their last 16 meetings.

Smith, Lopez and Sleigh were dominant in their victories. Smith won by a 14-2 major decision over Paddy Quinlan at 141 pounds, while Lopez shut out Mike Berkowitz, 10-0, at 157. Sleigh recorded the only pin of the night, putting Jack Argast on his back in 53 seconds at 197 pounds.

D.J. Hollingshead (165) and Garrett Hoffman (184) posted tech falls to give the Bison five bonus-point victories overall. Hollingshead won by a 22-6 score, totaling 12 of his points in the third period. Hoffman had two four-point near falls on his way to the shutout victory.

Gessner joined Hoffman as freshmen to win on Tuesday as he opened the match with a 4-2 decision in the 125-pound bout to open the match. A third-period reversal proved to be the difference in the bout.

Chad Reese won by a 10-4 decision at 174 pounds and Tyler Greene concluded the match with an easy 10-5 decision at heavyweight to round out the list of Bucknell winners.

The victory was the 99th of Bucknell head coach Dan Wirnsberger’s Bison career.

Bucknell, which had not competed since Dec. 17, has a busy week still ahead as it travels to Hampton, Virginia, for the Virginia Duals starting on Friday. The Bison will face Campbell and Arizona State on the opening day of the event.
