LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell football team defeated Georgetown in its final road game this past weekend and on Monday two Bison that contributed to that victory were honored by the Patriot League. Senior SAF/P Bret Berg (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) was named the Patriot League Special Teams Player of the Week, while freshman RB Chad Freshnock (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) earned his third Patriot League Rookie of the Week award this season.

Berg, who also starts at safety, took over as Bucknell’s punter last month after injuries plagued the position. He has been outstanding filling in as he leads the Bison in punts (25) and punt average (41.5) this season. This past weekend at Georgetown, Berg punted six times for an average of 41.3 yards per kick. He had two punts land inside the 20-yard line and one touchback.

Berg’s 41.5 season average would rank second in Bucknell’s record book for a single season behind only Alex Pechin’s 42.1 average from 2015.

A two-year starter at safety, Berg registered six tackles, one tackle for loss and one interception in the win over the Hoyas. He ranks second on the team with a career-high 66 stops.

This is the first Patriot League weekly award of Berg’s career.

Freshnock is the only player in the Patriot League to be named Rookie of the Week more than once this season. The reserve running back ran 13 times for 47 yards and a touchdown against Georgetown, bringing his season totals to 509 yards and eight touchdowns. Freshnock has scored at least one touchdown in four consecutive games.

Berg, Freshnock and their Bison teammates will wrap up the 2016 campaign this Saturday, Nov. 19, when they host Fordham. Kickoff is at noon at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. The game will be televised on American Sports Network and will also air online on the Patriot League Network.
