LEWISBURG, Pa. – The 2017 Bucknell football schedule features six home games, including the first-ever matchup with Monmouth, and a road trip to William & Mary, against whom the Bison have not played in 21 years. The slate begins on Saturday, Sept. 2 with a home contest against Marist, and then Patriot League play crops up quickly as Holy Cross visits Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium in Week 2.

Bucknell will play Marist in its season opener for the third straight season and fifth time in the last six years. The Bison are 11-1 all-time against the Red Foxes, including a 26-10 verdict last season in Poughkeepsie.

After taking on Holy Cross on Football Alumni Weekend on Sept. 9, the Bison hit the road for the first time on Sept. 16 at William & Mary. The Tribe finished 5-6 last season but routed No. 7 Richmond 34-13 in the season finale. Bucknell and William & Mary last played in 1996. The Tribe won that one 47-0, but at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium, but the Bison would rebound and win the Patriot League title that season. William & Mary’s holds a 4-0 series lead, with the other games contested in 1986, 1987 and 1990.

Bucknell returns home on Sept. 23 to face Sacred Heart on Family Weekend. The Bison and Pioneers previously played in 2013 and 2014, with the road teams winning both matchups. Sacred Heart won 16-0 in Lewisburg in 2013, while the Bison returned the favor a year later, 36-20. The Pioneers finished 6-5 last season.

The inaugural Bucknell-Monmouth clash will take place on Sept. 30 at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. This will be the second straight year that Bucknell has played a member of the Big South Conference. The Bison fell at Charleston Southern in 2016. Monmouth went 4-2 in non-league games last season, including wins over Patriot League contenders Lehigh and Fordham, with the losses coming to Division I FBS member Kent State and nationally ranked Coastal Carolina. The Hawks went 0-5 in the tough Big South to finish 4-7 on the season.

After a bye week, the Bison travel to Cornell on Oct. 14. The Bison and Big Red will be meeting for the 18th time in the last 19 seasons, with the only interruption due to the 9/11 tragedy in 2001. Cornell won 24-16 last season in Lewisburg, while the Bison scored a last-second touchdown to win 19-14 in Ithaca in 2015.

After the Cornell game, it’s nothing but Patriot League play the rest of the way. Bucknell travels to Lafayette and Colgate in back-to-back weeks to close out the month of October, then Lehigh and Georgetown travel to Lewisburg on Nov. 4 and 11. The Lehigh game will be part of Homecoming Weekend festivities.

The regular-season finale will be Nov. 18 at Fordham.

The 2017 season will be the 132nd year of football at Bucknell, and the eighth under head coach Joe Susan. The Bison are currently in the midst of spring practice, with the annual Spring Game slated for Friday, Apr. 21 at 7 p.m.
