Horan, also a 2016 academic all-district honoree, becomes the third Bison this decade to twice capture this prestigious award, joining Tim Bolte (2011 and 2010) and Matt DelMauro (2014 and 2015). Pyles, who was earlier named a William V. Campbell Trophy® semifinalist, is making his first appearance on an academic all-district team.
Horan and Pyles have both excelled academically during their time at Bucknell. They are the only seniors who have earned a spot on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll each of the past three seasons for maintaining a GPA of at least 3.20.
On the field, Horan has been an impact player since moving to wide receiver from quarterback in 2016. That season, he finished second among Bison in receiving yards (239). In 2017, he has been a favorite target of Bucknell's quarterbacks, registering team highs in receptions (26) and receiving yards (377) despite missing the Lehigh and Georgetown games due to injury.
An Accounting and Financial Management major, Horan is a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta national honor society and the Beta Gamma Sigma academic honor society. He was also selected to the 2016 Academic All-Patriot League Team.
One of only nine Bison to serve as team captain more than once, Pyles is a two-time All-Patriot League selection. In 2015, he finished fifth in the Patriot League with a team-best 95 tackles. This season, he currently ranks second among Bison with 70 tackles; he has also totaled 6.0 tackles for a loss, 2.5 sacks and his first career interception.
Pyles enters the final game of his collegiate career with 228 tackles (128 solo) in 41 games. He has started 30 contests, including the past 19 in a row. A workhorse, he is one of only three seniors who has played in at least 40 games, joining Trey Johnson and Abdullah Anderson. He is also one of only three to make at least 30 starts, joining Anderson and Ben Richard.
An Economics major, Pyles was among 181 semifinalists for the 2017 William V. Campbell Trophy®, more commonly known as the Academic Heisman. He and Lehigh's Jimmy Mitchell were the lone Patriot League student-athletes among the 37 semifinalists that hailed from FCS teams.
The Bison have now placed at least one student-athlete on the CoSIDA Academic All-District 2 Team each of the past four seasons. Since 1981, Bucknell has earned 52 Academic All-District 2 Team citations.
The CoSIDA Academic All-District Football Team recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. First-team Academic All-District honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team ballot. First- and second-team Academic All-America honorees will be announced in December.
