CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Brandon Benson was honored as the Patriot League Rookie of the Week for the first time in his collegiate career, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
Benson made 10 tackles during the Bucknell football team's Homecoming game against Lehigh, tying senior linebacker Mark Pyles for the team lead. The freshman safety also recorded one quarterback hurry and helped the Bison defense hold the high-powered Mountain Hawk offense to 116.8 yards below their 2017 average.
Benson has reached the double digits in tackles in three of Bucknell's past five games, including the past two in a row. All but one of his 53 tackles, which ranks fourth on the team, came over that span.
Benson is the second Bison to capture the Patriot League Rookie of the Week award. Simeon Page was honored on Sept. 4 after totaling two solo tackles, one tackle for a loss and one sack to help Bucknell limit Marist to 154 yards of total offense in its 45-6 season-opening victory.
Other Bison to earn Patriot League weekly awards in 2017 include John Burdick (Oct. 16 and Sept. 25 Special Teams Player of the Week), Colin Jonov (Oct. 23 Defensive Player of the Week) and Ben Richard (Sept. 25 Defensive Player of the Week).
Benson and the Bison close the home portion of their schedule on Saturday when they host Georgetown at 12 p.m. Before the game, Bucknell will recognize its 19-man senior class.
