LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell track and field members Christine Bendzinski, Luke Giugliano and Ross Pirnie earned College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSida) Academic All-District Team honors, announced on Thursday. All three Bison are receiving the honor for the first time in their career and will advance to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration.
In order to be eligible for Academic All-District and All-America recognition, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore, maintain a minimum 3.30 cumulative GPA and be a starter or key reserve on his/her team.
Bendzinski, a cell biology and biochemistry major with a 3.73 GPA, adds the Academic All-District award to the three Academic All-Patriot League Team selections she earned this season. She was named to the Academic All-Patriot League squad in cross-country along with the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons.
Bendzinski continues to add to her already impressive resume in just her second season at Bucknell. She helped the cross-country team to its ninth Patriot League Championship, while earning First Team All-Patriot League honors.
During the indoor track and field season, Bendzinski won the Patriot League title in the mile, while helping the 4x800-meter relay squad win the gold medal with a school and Patriot League record-setting time (8:53.53). In the outdoor season, she earned All-Patriot League status in the 1,500 and 4x800 relay events. At the ECAC Championships, she won the 1,500-meter race, becoming just one of three Bison to win an individual title at the meet. She is also a 2016 NCAA Regional qualifier in the event.
Giugliano, a mechanical engineering major with a 3.97 GPA, adds the Academic All-District award after earning Academic All-Patriot League accolades during the indoor season. Giugliano scored in both the 3,000 and 5,000-meter events at the Patriot League Indoor Championships, while earning All-East status with his second-place finish in the 5,000 at the IC4A Championships.
Pirnie, a cell biology and biochemistry major with a 3.74 GPA, adds the Academic All-District honor to an already impressive senior season. Pirnie is the Patriot League champion in the steeplechase and was named to the Academic All-Patriot League Team for the outdoor season.
Division I Academic All-America winners will be announced on June 24th.
