LEWISBURG, Pa. – Colleen Buckley and Kate Scott broke program records Friday night under the lights on the opening day of the Bison Outdoor Classic at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. The Bison flexed their muscles in their first home meet of the outdoor season, winning three events.
Buckley was the top runner in the 5,000-meter, winning the race with a time of 16:29.83, finishing nearly four seconds faster than the second-place runner. Buckley shattered the previous best of 16:37.23, set by Christine Bendzinski earlier this season at the Colonial Relays. Lauren Gronbeck turned in an ECAC-qualifying mark of 16:52.68, now fourth-fastest in Bucknell history.
Scott broke a 30-year-old school record in the 10,000m. The senior finished second in a field of 46 runners with a time of 34:46.48, smashing the previous mark of 35:05.14 set by Judy Perry in 1987.
Bendzinski won the 1,500m, coming from behind to win the race with a time of 4:20.13, just shy of her program-record of 4:19.99 set at the meet last season. Sarah Chandler set a personal-record with an ECAC-mark of 4:26.07, now the third-fastest time in school annals. Kathleen Fitzgerald recorded a top-10 program effort with an ECAC-qualifying time of 4:30.39.
Meg Sangimino was the top thrower in the javelin, winning the event with a toss of 158-04, just short of the school record of 158-07 set by Laura Rycek in 2011. Stephanie Easse set a new personal-record in the discus, posting an ECAC-qualifying throw of 149-03, a new top-10 program effort.
Elizabeth Sheprow set a personal-record in the steeplechase, completing the race with an ECAC-qualifying mark of 10:49.29, third-fastest in school history. Tori Gerlach of Penn State broke the facility record with a time of 9:50.60, breaking the previous best of 9:53.70 recorded in 2009.
"What an incredible evening," said head coach Kevin Donner. "Big PRs for Sangimino and Easse in the javelin and discus respectively. Meg just missed our school record. Our ladies were rockin' on the track tonight. Chrissy winning the 1,500m in 4:20 will solidify a spot at the NCAAs. Buckley ran incredible in the 5k for the win and school record. Gronbeck had a big PR to go under 17 minutes and Kate broke a very old 10k school record which should get her in the NCAAs. Also happy to see Sheprow hit the ECAC mark in the steeple."
Bucknell will resume action at the Bison Outdoor Classic on Saturday beginning at 9:30 a.m. with field events. Track events will begin at 11 a.m. The final day will broadcast on FloTrack. Sign up here.
