BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Bucknell's Maura Fiamoncini finished second in the javelin Friday at the USATF Junior National Championships at Indiana University's Hayes Track. With the runner-up finish, the freshman qualified for the IAAF World U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland.
Fiamoncini's best throw (177-3) came on her first attempt of the day. That was nearly four feet better than the third-place finisher, North Carolina's Madison Wiltrout. Dana Baker, competing unattached, won the event with a throw of 178-1.
The USATF meet came just one weekend after Fiamoncini earned Second Team All-America honors at the NCAA Championships. Prior to that she won the title at both the Patriot League Championships and ECAC Championships.
"Maura looked a lot looser than she did in Eugene last week and obviously had a great day to finish second," Bucknell head coach Kevin Donner said. "I have always felt that the biggest honor a track and field athlete can have is to represent your country in a world championship. She deserves the honor and will represent Bucknell with great pride."
The 2018 IAAF U20 Championships will be held in Finland on July 10-15.
