WILMINGTON, N.C. – Lauren Lichtenwalner and Taylor Langtry combined on a shutout with the help of a solid defensive effort behind them as Bucknell closed the Seahawk Softball Classic with a 3-0 win over host UNCW on Sunday at Boseman Field.

Bucknell went 3-2 at the event, also posting wins over Longwood and Maine. The Bison upped their season record to 4-6.

Licthenwalner went the first 4.2 innings and recorded the win, giving up three hits and two walks while striking out one. She didn’t run into any trouble until the fifth inning, when UNCW loaded the bases with two outs. Langtry came on in relief and ended the threat with a strikeout on a 3-2 pitch.

Langtry registered her first save of the season with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. She gave up two hits, didn’t walk a batter, and struck out two. The senior hasn’t allowed an earned run in 12.1 innings of work this season.

Meghan Kovac provided the spark offensively in the win with a two-run double to center field in the top of the third inning. Paulina Gutkin and Lauren Hadley, who led off the inning with a walk and a bunt single, scored on Kovac’s hit.

Bucknell added a run in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Hadley. Taylor Wolfgang started the inning with a single. Pinch-runner- Tara Baglivo advanced to second on a bunt single by Anna Gimmestad and scored on the two-out hit by Hadley.

The Seahawks, who dropped to 4-5 on the season, had the game-tying run at the plate with runners on the corners and two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Langtry fielded a bunt attempt to get the final out.

Hadley had two of Bucknell’s six hits, while Kovac, Wolfgang, Gimmestad, and Ryanne Rokos had one apiece.

Kelli Freeman led UNCW at the plate with a pair of singles and a hit-by-pitch.

The Bison were strong defensively, posting their fourth errorless game of the season. They had one double play in the game, which was turned by Gimmestad and Hadley after a leadoff single in the fourth inning.

Bucknell has now won three consecutive games in the series with UNCW. The Bison won the final two games between the teams in 2016.

Five more games await Bucknell when it travels to play in Towson’s Tiger Clash on March 2-4. The Bison will play Quinnipiac twice, St. John’s twice, and Towson once.
