MALVERN, Pa. -- Freshman J.P. Raftery fired a career-best, 1-under-par 70 on Monday to help the Bucknell men's golf team to a second-place standing at the midpoint of the Wildcat Invitational at White Manor Country Club.

The Bison opened with a 298 team score, which puts them in a tie for second place alongside Delaware and La Salle, nine strokes behind tournament-leading Wagner. Binghamton and host Villanova are just one shot back at 299.

Raftery had a great opening round for Bucknell, compiling one of only four sub-par scores in the field of 114 players. Raftery made four birdies and three bogeys in his round, with the last of those birdies at the par-5 17th hole giving him his first career red number.

Kyle Wambold of Binghamton posted a 2-under 69 to take sole possession of the individual lead. Raftery, Villanova's Andrew MacMillan, and Delaware's Jack Gianniny are all one shot back, followed by La Salle's P.J. Acierno at even par. Nineteen players are within five shots of the lead.

One of those is Bison sophomore Daniel Levin, who followed Raftery with a 2-over 73 to sit in an eight-way tie for 12th place. Levin made two birdies and was even par on the back nine.

Bucknell also counted a 76 from freshman Jubal Early and a 79 from junior D.J. Magee

The second and final round gets underway Tuesday morning.
