WEST POINT, N.Y. – Bucknell men’s tennis opened league play with a pair of matches at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center on Sunday, posting a 4-0 win over Holy Cross and a 4-0 loss to host Army West Point. The Bison moved to 6-14 overall and 1-1 in the Patriot League with wins in four of their past seven matches.

“This was really the first matches of the year where the entire team played to the level they are capable of playing,” Bucknell head coach Bruce Myers said. “That makes me excited, because I honestly believe we have an even higher level to achieve this year.”

Bucknell’s shutout win over Holy Cross came in its second match of the day and started with a doubles point thanks to wins on courts one and two. Andrei Vitiuc and Bryan Adams teamed for a 6-2 win on court two to get things started, and Max Palmer and Daniel Wright were 6-2 winners in the top spot to clinch the point.

The Bison wasted little time in putting the match away in singles play, winning the first three completed matches all in straight sets. Palmer had the first victory by 6-0, 6-1 scores on court two, while Colin Sacco followed with a 6-0, 6-2 win on court six.

Vitiuc clinched the match for the Bison with a 6-0, 6-2 decision on court three.  They had won the first set on each of the three remaining courts that went unfinished.

Holy Cross fell to 1-11 overall and 0-4 in the Patriot League.

“Holy Cross was tricky, but we didn’t allow any letdown from the Army match,” Myers said. “We stayed focused and took care of business.”

The Bison opened the day with a 4-0 loss to Army West Point. The preseason favorite in the Patriot League, the Black Knights upped their record to 14-8 overall and 4-0 in the conference.

Both Wright and Adams were in close three-set battles in their singles matches before the match was clinched. Wright was tied 1-1 with Michael Nguyen, a Second Team All-Patriot League selection last year, and trailed 3-2 in the third set. Adams was tied 1-1 against Grant Riechmann, also a Second Team honoree, and was down 2-0 in the final set.

“We had three potential wins that went unfinished, and we now know we can compete with the best in the conference,” Myers said. “Now we have one more road trip before we finally get a home match.”

Bucknell heads to Baltimore for three matches in two days this coming weekend. The Bison will play at Morgan State on Friday, and at Loyola and Coppin State on Saturday.
