SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Bucknell men’s tennis nearly pulled off an upset in the Patriot League Tournament for a fourth consecutive season, but came up short in a 4-2 loss to third-seeded Colgate in the quarterfinal round Friday at the Drumlins Country Club.
“It was an amazingly difficult loss to Colgate at its home indoor facility,” Myers said. “I can’t say enough about this team and seniors, and what they have meant to the program.”
Colgate (15-6) clinched the match with a three-set win on court five that was decided by a 6-4 score in the final set. If Bucknell had pulled out that contest, the match would have come down to a battle on court one between the Bison’s Daniel Wright and the Raiders’ Jacob Daugherty. They were tied 6-6 in the third set when play was halted.
Bucknell continued its strong play in doubles with wins on courts one and two. Wright and Gerber beat Tyler Krantz and Noah Rosenblat 6-1 on court one, while Andrei Vitiuc and Max McDonald teamed for a 6-3 victory over Daugherty and Alec Dardis on court two.
McDonald recorded the lone singles win for the Bison, defeating Dardis 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 on court four.
The Bison were playing as the sixth seed for a third straight year after beating the third seed in each of the past two Patriot League Tournaments. They also won a quarterfinal match as a fifth seed in 2015.
Bucknell closes the season at 6-22 overall, but it faced a challenging schedule. Included on the slate were matches against Miami, North Carolina, Michigan State, Penn State, Pepperdine, and Butler.
