BOARDMAN, Ohio – Playing without its top player in singles, the Bucknell women’s tennis team lost 5-2 to Youngstown State on Saturday at the Boardman Tennis Center. The Bison picked up points with singles wins by Sofia Ayuso and Madeline Melch.

The Bison saw their record dip to 4-3, while the Penguins improved to 3-7.

“Our energy was definitely better today,” Bucknell head coach Rebecca Helt said. “Now we just need to keep our energy and focus consistent from match to match so we actually focus on execution and picking up a few more point, games and sets.”

Ayuso stayed unbeaten this spring at 3-0 with a three-set win on court five. She took the first set 6-3, dropped the second 6-0, and came through in the clutch with a 6-2 victory in the third. The freshman’s previous two wins came on court six.

Melch upped her record to 3-1 with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Lucia Zagar on court six.

The Bison notched a victory in one of the three doubles matches. Lisa Jouravleva and Paige Leavy improved to 5-2 with a 6-1 win over Sofia Macias and Anastasiia Khokhlova on court one.

Bucknell will play at Saint Joseph’s on Feb. 24, and will play Marist at the Northwood Racquet Club in Easton, Pennsylvania on Feb. 25.
