ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Bucknell won the top five singles matches on its way to a 5-2 win at St. Bonaventure in a non-conference women’s tennis matchup Saturday at the St. Bonaventure Fitness Center.
Senior Michele Urbinati, freshman Paige Leavy, and junior Madeline Melch all won in straight sets. Urbinati’s win came by a 7-5, 6-1 score on court one, evening her spring record to 2-2 at No. 1 singles.
Leavy’s first collegiate dual win came by 6-2, 6-4 scores on court three. She improved to 7-6 overall. Melch stayed unbeaten at 4-0 with a 6-4, 6-3 win on court four.
Sophomore Lauren Fishbein and senior Melissa Parks both won in three sets. Fishbein improved to 3-0 during the spring with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 victory on court two, while Parks also improved to 3-0 during the spring with a 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 win on court five.
Bucknell dropped the doubles point, but did get a win on court three. Sophomore Danielle Gannon and Parks teamed up for a 6-2 victory. It was their first time playing together this spring after going 1-2 in the fall.
“We’re still coming out too flat in doubles,” Bucknell head coach Rebecca Helt said. “We have to figure out, win or lose, how to come out with more energy. I was happy to see the battles in singles. We were very competitive. Mel (Parks) had a great comeback after being down a set and then 4-1 to come back and win in a tiebreaker. That’s the kind of fight we’re looking for.”
The Bison will stay in New York for a match against Niagara on Sunday at 11 a.m.
