LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell women's tennis head coach Rebecca Helt has announced a four-player recruiting class set to join the Bison for the 2017-18 season. Joining the team will be Sofia Ayuso, Rachel Carroll, Cayla Koch, and Schuyler La Barge.

“I'm really excited about the talent this freshman class is bringing to our team,” Helt said. “All four freshmen have the ability to impact or contribute to this team. Their level of play and rankings continue to rise, and I'm thrilled to have the chance to work with them and watch them thrive at the college level.”

The following is a closer look at each incoming player:

Sofia Ayuso (Nueva Esparta, Venezuela/Manuel Placido Maneiro)
Achieved Universal Tennis Rating of 8 … ranked second nationally and first regionally in 18s … ranked first in Nueva Esparta the top five nationally in 14s, 16s, and 18s … competed independently as Venezuela does not have high school tennis … daughter of Julio Ayuso and Laura Mayz … has one older sister, Selene.

 

 

 

Rachel Carroll (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day School)
Four-year letterwinner and two-year captain at Charlotte Country Day School … earned all-state recognition in North Carolina as a senior … four-year all-conference … team MVP as a senior … First Team Singles as a senior and Second Team Doubles as a junior by the Charlotte Observer … went unbeaten as a freshman and sophomore and lost just three matches over four seasons … achieved Universal Tennis Rating of 7.74 in singles … ranked 17th in North Carolina 18s by the USTA … led team to four state titles … member of the National Art Honor Society and Big Brothers Big Sisters … daughter of Rick and Nancy Carroll … has one younger brother, Kent … mother played tennis at Salem College … grandfather, Budge Kent, Jr., played tennis and baseball at Randolph-Macon College.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Cayla Koch (Weston, Conn./Weston)
Four-year letterwinner and one-year captain at Weston High School … went 97-8 over for seasons while playing first singles … four-time first team all-state in Connecticut … all-area MVP … three-time state open singles semifinalist … achieved Universal Tennis Rating of 9 … ranked as high as seventh in New England by the USTA … selected to represent New England on three zonal teams, reaching semifinals in singles and doubles of 16s … led high school team to two state titles and two conference titles … daughter of Richard and Janet Koch … has one older sister, Lindsay, who plays lacrosse at William & Mary.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Schuyler La Barge (Ambler, Pa./William Penn Charter School)
Played final two seasons at William Penn Charter School, serving as team captain her senior season … two-time All-Inter AC … won league title as a senior and placed third as a junior … led William Penn Charter to 2016 Inter-AC title … played first two seasons at Upper Dublin High School, where she placed second in the league in doubles as a freshman and fourth in singles as a sophomore … achieved Universal Tennis Rating of 7.45 … ranked 25th in the Middle States Section … also lettered in track and field … daughter of Kristyn Vandegrift La Barge and Joe La Barge … both parents were student-athletes and 1993 graduates of Bucknell … mother played tennis for the Bison and father was on the track and field team … other relatives to graduate from Bucknell include Jay Vandegrift '66, Michelle La Barge '95, Ashley Vandegrift '96, Tyler Vandegrift '02, and Katy Zachry Vandegrift ' 02 … has three younger siblings: Brinlea, Liam, and Jamison … competes with sister in doubles at USTA Tournaments.
