WASHINGTON, D.C. – Playing the perennial power of the Patriot League, the Bucknell volleyball team looked great in the first set, but eventually fell 3-0 to American on Saturday. The Bison dropped to 10-10 overall and 4-6 in the conference, while the Eagles improved to 18-6 overall and a perfect 9-0 in Patriot League play.
The Eagles, which won by scores of 27-25, 25-16 and 25-19, were led by Monika Smidova with nine kills, 32 assists and 15 digs. Allison Cappellino led all players with 13 kills.
Blake Buchholz posted a double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs for Bucknell. The freshman leads the team in digs and is second in kills. Junior Erika Eastley added six kills with a hitting percentage of .545. senior Meghan Wentzel tallied 27 assists, and senior Katie Price finished with 12 digs.
Bucknell is .500 through 20 matches for the first time since the 2006-07 season. The Bison have six matches remaining on their regular season schedule and have already played the league’s top team twice. Four of their final six matches are against teams in the bottom four of the Patriot League standings.
The Bison will look to move above .500 when they travel to Annapolis, Maryland for a match against Navy on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. They defeated the Mids for the first time since 2011 in their first matchup this season. The Mids are coming off a win over third-place Lehigh.
