LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell volleyball team put the finishing touches on its best season in nine years with a 3-0 win over visiting Holy Cross on Saturday at Davis Gym. The Bison completed a weekend sweep of Patriot League opponents, which included their first win over Army West Point since 2006 on Friday.
The Bison closed the season at 14-12 overall, their best record since going 20-12 in 2006. They finished 8-8 in the Patriot League, their most conference wins since 2010, and took fifth in the league standings, missing out on the final spot in the Patriot League Tournament by just two wins.
Head coach Anna Allison stressed team play from the Bison all season and Saturday’s win was the definition of that. Seven players combined for the team’s 35 kills, including four with at least five kills as the Bison won controlled from start to finish and won by scores of 25-21, 25-16, 25-19. Campbell led the way with nine in her final match at Bucknell, while freshman Blake Buchholz and junior Erika Eastley added eight apiece and sophomore Hailey Stout contributed five.
“The challenge is always to play up to your level no matter who the competition is,” said Bucknell head coach Anna Allison. “In the first set we were a little tentative, but in the second and third we really found our groove and played our game which was really good to see.”
Campbell added to her block totals that already had her ranking near the top of Bucknell’s record book. She led all players Saturday with six block assists. She finishes her career second in program history with 308 block assists and third with 388 total blocks. She ends the season with the second most blocks in the Patriot League, as well as the fifth best hitting percentage and fifth most kills.
All four of the team’s seniors contributed in the win. Meghan Wentzel led all players with 29 assists, finishing the regular season with the third most in the conference. She completed a double-double with 12 digs and added five block assists. Katie Price served for a match-high three aces and added eight digs, while Kristen Gelenitis tallied four block assists and two kills. Junior Jordan Walker had a team-high 15 digs for Bucknell
The Bison held Holy Cross to a .092 hitting percentage. Mandy Sifferlen had 11 kills and 19 digs, while Natalie Welsch tallied 10 kills and four block assists.
