LEXINGTON, Va. – Josh Winder (2-0) struck out 10 batters and allowed just one run scored over eight innings while VMI posted nine hits against four Bison pitchers as Bucknell dropped the opener of a three-game set to the Keydets by a 6-1 margin Friday afternoon.

The Bison (1-3) lineup posted five hits in the contest, including a pair of doubles from Danny Rafferty, who has now reached base in all four games and hitting .545 this season. He plated Bucknell’s only run of the afternoon in the third inning, scoring Chuckie Scales.

VMI (2-4), making its 2017 home debut, tied the game with a run in the fifth inning, followed by four more scores in the sixth, highlighted by a three-run home run from Will Malbon. The Keydets added one more run in the seventh inning.

Seven different players recorded a hit for VMI, including Malbon, who went 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs and one run scored. Mason Adamson scored two runs, while coming in to pitch in relief for the final inning.

Connor Van Hoose (0-2) got the start on the mound for Bucknell. The junior pitched into the sixth inning and struck out eight batters, but issued five hits and was charged with four earned runs. Mike Stephens (0.2), Matt Shobe (0.1) and Tommy Gambon (1.2) came on relief and limited VMI to two runs over the final 2.2 innings.

Bucknell and VMI will play the middle game of their three-game series Saturday at 4 p.m.
