PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - Connor Van Hoose recorded a career-high 12 strikeouts and pitched 7.2 innings to lead the Bucknell baseball team to a 3-1 win over Massachusetts Saturday at North Charlotte Regional Park. The Bison finish their spring break trip with a 4-3 record, picking up wins over the Minutemen, Iowa and Northeastern.
Van Hoose (2-2) was impressive in the rubber match, limiting the Minutemen to three hits. The junior did not allow a hit through the first 3.1 innings of play. His 12 strikeouts are the second-most thrown by a Patriot League pitcher this season.
The Bison got on the board in the sixth inning, scoring two runs. Klugerman drew a walk to leadoff the inning, while Tyler Wincig was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second base. Scales reached base on an error to load the bases. Smith scored Klugerman on a fielder’s choice, while JohnPaul Bell scored Wincig after hitting into a double play.
Massachusetts (4-7) scored its only run of the game in the seventh, but the Bison quickly answered with a score in the bottom of the inning, thanks to a RBI single from Klugerman to score Luke Johnson.
Mike Geannelis started on the mound for the Minutemen, pitching seven innings. He allowed just two hits and was charged with two earned runs. Two relievers came in for the team, giving up two hits.
Bucknell’s eight wins thus far are second-most in the Patriot League, trailing only defending league champion Navy (9).
The Bison return to the field Tuesday (Mar. 21) with a game at Penn State at 6:30 p.m. Bucknell will make its 2017 Depew Field debut Wednesday (Mar. 22) against Saint Joseph’s at 3 p.m.
