LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell scored eight runs in the third inning to defeat Army West Point 10-5 in the opening game of a doubleheader Sunday at Depew Field. The Black Knights claimed the nightcap with a 16-14 victory in 11 innings.

Brett Smith was 6-for-9 with five runs scored, Sam Clark was 4-for-9 with eight RBIs and four runs scored, Danny Rafferty finished with two hits, four RBIs and four runs scored, while Luke Johnson posted three hits, four RBIs and scored two runs in the doubleheader.

Army took three of the four games in the series to move to 15-17 overall and 6-2 in league play. Bucknell moves to 13-17 overall with a 4-4 record in the Patriot League.

The Bison take a break from league play Tuesday (Apr. 11) with a contest at Penn State. Game time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Game 1: Bucknell 10, Army 5
Army got on the board in the opening inning, but the Bison quickly answered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, thanks to a two-run single from Clark.

The Black Knights responded with a two-run home run in the second inning to regain the lead, while plating two more runs in the fifth inning.

Rafferty began the third inning reaching base on an error, scoring on the next at bat off a double Clark, who scored off a single from Keifer Rawlings. Johnson scored on a fielder’s choice from Jared Drizin, Evan Klugerman drove in a run on a ground out, while Evan Madigan scored Chuckie Scales, recording his first collegiate hit. The inning was capped off by a two-run single from Rafferty and a fielder’s choice from Clark that scored JohnPaul Bell.

Jeff Gottesman got the start on the mound, pitching five innings. Tyler Wincig came on in relief for the final two innings and was fantastic, not allowing a hit while striking out three.

Game 2: Army 16, Bucknell 14 (11 innings)
The Black Knights scored one run in the top of the first inning, but Bucknell answered with two runs to take the lead. Rafferty tripled to right center to score Bell, while later scoring on an error. The Bison extended their lead in the second inning with a two-out single from Smith.

Army plated four in the fifth inning to take the lead, but the Bison jumped back in front, thanks to a grand slam to left field from Johnson, his first career home run as a Bison.

Army scored three runs in the sixth inning, but Bucknell countered with five runs, fueled by a three-run homer from Clark. The Black Knights scored two runs each in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings to total 14 runs.

Bucknell scored one run in the eighth inning, a ground out from Madigan that scored Clark, and plated the tying run in the ninth inning of a single from Clark.

The Bison scored 13 of their 14 runs in the game with two outs in the frame.

Army scored two runs in the 11th inning to pick up the win.
