LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell baseball team was well represented on the All-Patriot League Teams, which were announced on Wednesday by the league office. The Bison had a total of four players honored, including three First Team selections. In addition, senior outfielder Brett Smith was chosen as the Patriot League's inaugural Defensive Player of the Year.

The major awards and All-Patriot League honors were voted on by Patriot League head coaches, who could not select their own student-athletes or themselves.

Smith earned a spot on the First Team to go along with his Defensive Player of the Year citation and was joined by pitcher Connor Van Hoose and third baseman Sam Clark. Infielder Luke Johnson landed a spot on the Second Team.

Smith, a unanimous First Team selection, earns his second consecutive First Team citation and becomes the ninth Bison in Bucknell history to earn three all-league accolades. The Patriot League Rookie of the Year in 2014, Smith is having another fantastic season as the team's leadoff hitter. The team captain has started all 45 games in center field and leads the squad in batting average (.322), hits (58), doubles (15) and runs (34), all of which rank among the top-10 in the Patriot League this season. A Senior CLASS Award finalist, Smith is batting .405 and has a perfect fielding percentage against Patriot League opponents.

A starter in 187 consecutive games, Smith is a career .299 hitter and is Bucknell's all-time leader in games played (195), games started (195) and hits (227). He also ranks among the top-10 in runs (153), walks (92), total bases (289) and triples (13).

Van Hoose, a unanimous First Team honoree, earns his first all-league citation of his career. A right-hander who is Bucknell's No. 1 starter this season, Van Hoose is 5-5 on the mound with a 2.57 ERA and leads the team and the Patriot League in strikeouts (84). He is currently tied with Eric Junge (1999) for the second-most strikeouts in a single-season in Bison history. Van Hoose has been formidable against league opponents, posting a 1.87 ERA, second only to Navy's Kyle Condry, the Patriot League Pitcher of the Year.

Clark earns First Team honors for the second straight season. A Preseason All-Patriot League selection, Clark is hitting .299 this spring, with six home runs, 31 RBIs and 24 runs scored in 43 games played. Clark leads the squad with 17 multi-hit performances and eight multi-RBI outings. His 12 game hitting streak in April was the longest on the team this season.

A veteran of 158 games, Clark will enter this weekend's Patriot League Semifinal series at Navy with 143 career hits.

Johnson lands his first all-league nod in the midst of having a solid season in the Bucknell infield. The junior has appeared in 43 games, including 42 starts, splitting time between shortstop and second base. A starter in 73 career games, Johnson is batting .279 this spring with 13 extra-base hits, 25 RBIs and 24 runs scored. His 11 multi-hit games are fourth-most on the roster.

After a nearly two-week layoff for final exams, Bucknell will return to action this weekend (May 13-14) for the best-of-three Patriot League Semifinal Series against top-seeded Navy in Annapolis. The Bison are the fourth seed in the field. The two teams will play one game on Saturday at 1 p.m., and play two on Saturday if necessary. Game two is scheduled to begin at noon. Each game of the series will broadcast on the Patriot League Network.
