DAVIDSON, N.C. – Butler (6-4) scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to get past the Bucknell baseball team by a 4-3 decision Saturday at Wilson Field. The Bison finished with eight hits in the loss.
Eight different Bison (3-5) recorded a hit, including Sam Clark and Chuckie Scales, who finished with two each. JohnPaul Bell, Brett Smith and Alex Baumann scored Bucknell’s three runs in the contest.
Mike Castellani was solid on the mound for 5.1 innings. He allowed seven hits, while striking out six and being charged with one earned run. Jack Simpson (2.2) was impressive in relief, striking out five and limiting the Bulldogs to one hit.
In three appearances this season, Simpson has a 1.00 ERA with 14 strikeouts in 9.0 innings.
The Bison scored their first run in the opening inning, thanks to a two-out single from Clark to score Smith from second.
Butler countered with a score in the third inning off a two-out single from Tyler Houston.
Bucknell regained the lead with one run in the fourth, scored by Baumann. The Bulldogs tied the game again in the fifth.
In the seventh inning, Bell gave the Bison a 3-2 lead, scoring on a sacrifice fly from Keifer Rawlings.
The Bulldogs scored their final two runs in the ninth on two hits and two errors. Butler’s first three batters in the lineup combined to go 7-15 with one RBI and three runs scored in the win.
Ryan Pepiot got the start for Butler, scattering six hits and striking out eight in 6.0 innings. Three relievers came on for the final nine outs, holding Bucknell to two hits.
Danny Rafferty (0-1) was charged with the loss.
Bucknell concludes play at Davidson on Sunday with a contest against Hartford. Game time is set for 10 a.m.
