LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Following two outstanding performances on the road to start the season, Bucknell senior Zach Thomas has been named Patriot League The Rock Player of the Week. Thomas began the campaign by setting career highs with 31 points and 16 rebounds in a 79-78 loss at Monmouth on Friday. He followed that up with 24 points and 10 boards in Sunday's setback at Arkansas.
Thomas had 24 points and 11 rebounds in the second half alone against Monmouth. Three times in the last five minutes of the game he scored to either tie the game or give the Bison the lead, the last of which was a go-ahead driving layup with 30 seconds to play.
Thomas recorded Bucknell's first 30-point game since Chris Hass netted 30 at Lafayette late in the 2015-16 season. His 16 rebounds were the most by a Bison since Mike Muscala had 19 against Navy in 2012-13, and he became the first Bucknell player to record at least 30 points and 15 rebounds in a game since 2001-02, when Boakai Lalugba did it against Cornell in Davis Gym.
Thomas, who has 55 points and 26 rebounds in two games, was 7-for-13 from the field and 5-for-7 from 3-point range against the Razorbacks. He has made five treys in each game so far and is 19-for-36 from the field and 10-for-18 from the arc.
Bucknell's difficult early season schedule continues Wednesday night at defending national champion North Carolina. The 8 p.m. tip will air on the ACC Network.
