LEWISBURG, Pa.  – Marc Buermann scored three goals and dished out two assists and Holy Cross scored the game’s final four goals to post a 10-8 comeback victory over Bucknell in men’s lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at a frigid Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. Sean O'Brien — who has a team-high 19 goals on the season — led the Bison with three goals, while Will Sands chipped in two goals and two assists.

The game was close throughout with seven ties and seven lead changes. Neither team led by more than one goal until Bucknell (2-4, 0-3 PL) went up 8-6 early in the fourth quarter. Holy Cross (2-4, 2-1 PL) then scored four times in a five-minute span with Buermann’s final goal serving as the go-ahead score with 7:16 to play. Sean Kirkpatrick tacked on an insurance goal with 5:31 to play.

Bucknell’s Connor O'Hara scored the game’s first 68 seconds in and then the teams went on a series of 2-0 runs. The Crusaders scored the next two goals, followed by two straight from Sands to end the first quarter. There were three more 2-0 runs until Bucknell scored three in a row at the end of the third quarter and early in the fourth.

The Bison went from trailing 6-5 to holding a 7-6 edge with two goals in the final 20 seconds of the third quarter. O’Brien tallied on an assist from Sands, and then Jarett Witzal won the ensuing faceoff and O’Hara netted another goal three seconds before the end of the quarter. O’Brien added a third straight score just over four minutes into the fourth quarter to make it 8-6.

Witzal dominated faceoffs for Bucknell, winning 15 of 21. However, three of the Crusaders’ six wins came in the final period.

Bucknell outshot Holy Cross 34-32 and picked up six more ground balls (30-24).

Neither team converted an extra-man opportunity as the Crusaders were 0-for-3 and the Bison were 0-for-1.

Christian Klipstein registered 10 saves in goal for Bucknell, while Holy Cross goalie Jonathan Tesoro recorded nine.

Two weeks ago, Holy Cross posted its first-ever victory over Patriot League rival Lehigh. Saturday’s win was its first against Bucknell in 28 meetings.

The Bison will play their first mid-week game this season when they open a two-game road swing at Villanova on Tuesday. Game time is 4 p.m. Bucknell returns to Patriot League play next Saturday, March 18, with a noon game at Boston University, which is a perfect 6-0 this season.
